Port St Johns

A part of the Eastern Cape that has been hidden from the world (due to whatever reasons you can think of in the pre-democracy times).

Eastern Cape (SA)

Here Vinkie almost crashed his 4x4 on a steep uphill in possibly the most beautiful part of the former Transkei. We were on our way to a little place called Poenskop. Poenskop is a local language (Afrikaans) name for 'very clean shaven head' (on humans, anyway). The real meaning is 'hornless bull' (horns cut off).

Here is the run up to the (almost) 'keel over of my vehicle' spot.

The start Number one. The run-up . . . A good 4x4'er has to check it out. Right?

Uh, oh. . . the start of the wrong line. (The sun was wrong, OK!)

Ooops wrong line!!! I can see it!!! (From behind the camera anyway)
Really almost chucked it in the ditch! Now you've done it!!!!

Sweating and swearing (and with some help from locals and buddies) Vinkie managed to work his way out.

Ooops, this time really!!!!!
Poenskop Some more exquisite pictures of this amazing area. Eventually getting to Poenskop we had a great time but, . . . . there is no path going any further, one has to walk.

A room with a view. On top of one of the outcrops at Port St Johns (just after the almost 'keel'). A stunning view.

Luck??? No!!!!!!!!!!! Vinkie trying his luck at fishing????

Port St Johns at its best. The base camp was at second beach (yeah, you’ve guessed it, there is a first and third beach).

Second beach
Second beach Little Vinkie having some fun on Second Beach. From here we were having a whale of a time trying to catch some fish, but . . . the object of this weekend was to enjoy ourselves (catching anything was a sideline). Tranquility galore!
